Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare the ocular rigidity in vivo meaurement of patient with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and control ubject.
Deign
Propective comparative clinical tudy.
Method
The preure-volume relation and the ocular rigidity coefficient were compared among 32 patient with AMD (AMD group: 16 with neovacular and 16 with nonneovacular AMD) and 44 age-matched control patient (control group) who underwent operation for cataract. Thi wa achieved by an injection of 200 μl of a balanced alt olution (in tep of 4.5 μl) through the limbu in the anterior chamber, while the intraocular preure wa monitored continually with a tranducer, up to the limit of 30 mm Hg.
Reult
The mean age (AMD group: 69.89 ± 15.92 year v control group: 65.28 ± 12.34 year; P = .195), gender (AMD group: 13 female v control group: 17 female; P = .513), eye’ axial length (AMD group: 23.14 ± 0.75 mm v control group: 23.04 ± 1.16 mm; P = .725) of patient with AMD and the healthy control ubject were comparable. No tatitically ignificant difference in ocular rigidity meaurement between patient with AMD and control ubject (AMD group: 0.0142 ± 0.0077 μl−1 v control group: 0.0125 ± 0.0049 μl−1; P = .255) wa found. When we examined eparately the two ubgroup of patient with AMD (neovacular and nonneovacular AMD), the average ocular rigidity meaurement were higher in patient with neovacular AMD v both control ubject and patient with nonneovacular AMD (neovacular AMD group: 0.0186 ± 0.0078 μl−1 v control group: 0.0125 ± 0.0048 μl−1 [P = .014] v nonneovacular AMD group: 0.0104 ± 0.0053 μl−1 [P = .004]).
Concluion
Depite the limitation placed by the mall ample of the examined cae, patient with neovacular AMD who are treated (with photodynamic therapy) have increaed ocular rigidity meaurement compared with patient with nonneovacular AMD and control patient.
