Abstract :
Purpoe
To analyze the effect of angiotenin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor liinopril on inflammatory cytoid macular edema and viual acuity.
Deign
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cro-over trial.
Method
etting: Outpatient clinic of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Univerity Medical Center of Utrecht. patient: Forty patient with inflammatory cytoid macular edema were included. intervention: Each patient received liinopril (10 mg daily) or placebo for three month. After two month of a liinopril/placebo free wah-out period, the group received the revere tudy medication for three month. Fluorecein angiography wa performed to evaluate the retina. main outcome meaure: Cytoid macular edema, bet-corrected viual acuity and contrat enitivity.
Reult
Liinopril had no effect on cytoid macular edema, viual acuity, papillary leakage, retinal vaculiti, and choroidal leakage. In a ubgroup analyi, we oberved a decreae in blood preure (liinopril, 14 of 36 patient; placebo, 5 of 36 patient; P = .02) and a decreae in morning urinary albumin excretion (liinopril, 23 of 35 patient; placebo 10 of 34 patient, P = .003) wa oberved.
Concluion
Although liinopril had no effect on inflammatory cytoid macular edema and viual acuity, we found a poitive effect on the vacular ytem.
