Abstract :
Purpoe To determine the effect of an adrenergic agonit and a cholinergic agonit on the lumen width of the naolacrimal drainage ytem. Deign Propective, nonrandomized, clinical trial. Method The aymptomatic ide of 33 patient (23 women, 10 men) with unilateral tenoi/obtruction of the naolacrimal drainage ytem were tudied. The tear menicu height of the aymptomatic ide wa normal, with a patent lacrimal ytem a reveled by dacryocytography. The naolacrimal drainage ytem of the aymptomatic ide wa infued with 100 μL of 5% phenylephrine hydrochloride (an α-1 adrenoceptor agonit) or 100 μL of 2% pilocarpine hydrochloride (a cholinergic agonit), and dacryocytography wa performed to determine the lumen width of the naolacrimal drainage ytem. Reult Phenylephrine caued a ignificant increae of the lumen width of the naolacrimal drainage ytem, and the change were more marked in the naolacrimal duct (NLD), epecially the upper and middle region, than in the lacrimal ac. In contrat, pilocarpine reduced the lumen width of the NLD ignificantly, epecially in the middle and lower region, and the lumen width of the lacrimal ac wa not ignificantly changed. Concluion The alteration of the lumen width of the naolacrimal drainage ytem, epecially the lumen width of the NLD by adrenergic and cholinergic agonit, ugget that the lumen width can be changed by the autonomic nervou ytem.
