Abstract
Purpoe
To examine the aociation between optic dik cupping and retinal vein occluion (RVO).
Deign
Propective epidemiologic tudy.
Method
etting: Population-baed propective tudy in Beaver Dam, Wiconin. tudy population: Adult aged 43 to 86 year at baeline (n = 4926). obervation procedure: Optic dik cupping and RVO were determined from retinal photograph. A tandardized medical examination and quetionnaire were adminitered. main outcome meaure: Ten-year cumulative incidence of RVO.
Reult
There were 58 peron who developed incident RVO at 5 (n = 31) or 10 (n = 27) year after the baeline examination. Thoe utaining RVO were older, had higher intraocular preure (IOP), and were more likely to have definite or probable glaucoma at the baeline examination. The odd of having an incident RVO increaed with increaing cup-to-dik ratio at baeline (odd ratio [OR] = 1.29/0.1 increae in cup-to-dik ratio, 95% confidence interval 1.07, 1.56), while controlling for age, ytolic blood preure, current moking, diabete tatu, and IOP. A imilar OR wa found after excluding thoe with glaucoma. Excluding peron with central (a oppoed to branch) vein occluion did not have a ignificant effect on the OR.
Concluion
Cup-to-dik ratio i a ignificant predictor of rik of incident RVO.
