  • Abstract
Purpoe To determine if there i an increaed rate of potoperative bacterial endophthalmiti after reident-performed cataract extraction relative to the reported rate of experienced urgeon. Deign Retropective, obervational cae erie. Method The operative report of the reident-performed cataract urgerie at an Francico General Hopital between 1983 and 2002 were reviewed. Cae of culture-poitive bacterial endophthalmiti and vitreou lo were identified. Reult Between 1983 and 2002, three cae (0.11%) of culture-poitive bacterial endophthalmiti occurred after 2718 reident-performed cataract extraction. The overall vitreou lo rate wa 6.7%. Two endophthalmiti cae were acute (taphylococcu epidermidi, treptococcu viridan), preenting within five day of urgerie complicated by vitreou lo, and one cae wa delayed-onet (Corynebacterium pecie) after Nd:YAG poterior capulotomy after uncomplicated cataract extraction. Concluion Depite higher rate of vitreou lo, the rate of endophthalmiti following reident-performed cataract urgery remain comparable with the rate of more experienced urgeon.
