Purpoe To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickne in patient with diabete mellitu compared with age-matched normal control ubject, to ae the correlation between the RNFL thickne and the everity of retinopathy, and to invetigate whether diabete mellitu i a potential ource of abnormal reult in glaucoma creening or evaluation with canning laer polarimetry (LP). Deign Cro-ectional analyi of normal and diabetic eye. Method etting: Intitutional clinical tudy. patient: One hundred twenty-eight ubject with type 2 diabete mellitu and 50 age-matched normal control ubject without glaucoma or glaucoma-upect. All patient underwent imaging with LP and repeatable automated perimetry. ubject with diabete mellitu were claified into four tage on the bai of the everity of retinopathy that wa aeed by dilated funducopic examination, high-quality fundu color photography, and fluorecein angiography. main outcome meaure: The LP (GDx VCC oftware, verion 5.5.0) parameter. Reult The RNFL thickne in patient with diabete mellitu wa reduced ignificantly compared with age-matched normal control eye (P < .01). Moreover, all RNFL thickne parameter of the GDx VCC oftware decreaed ignificantly a an exacerbation of diabetic retinopathy (P = .0019, P = .0045, P = .0010 for temporal-uperior-naal-inferior-temporal (TNIT) average, uperior average, inferior average, repectively). The nerve fiber indicator alo increaed ignificantly (P < .0001), depite an abence of glaucomatou optic nerve damage. Concluion The RNFL thickne in type 2 diabete mellitu, which wa meaured by GDx VCC oftware, ignificantly decreaed with the everity of diabetic retinopathy. The preence of diabete mellitu can be a ource of fale-poitive reult and overetimation of glaucomatou optic neuropathy when eye are creened with GDx VCC oftware.
