Homocyteine and Retinal Emboli: The Blue Mountain Eye tudy

Purpoe To examine the aociation between erum homocyteine and retinal emboli in a general older population. Deign Cro-ectional population-baed tudy. Method Homocyteine level wa determined from fating venou blood collection at the econd Blue Mountain Eye tudy (BME) (n = 3509, age ≥49 year, 1997 to 2000). Retinal emboli were graded from retinal photograph. Uing logitic regreion, we analyzed aociation between erum homocyteine and retinal emboli adjuting for age, gender, hypertenion, body ma index, and lipid level. Reult After multivariable adjutment, erum homocyteine wa aociated with preence of retinal emboli (odd ratio (OR) 1.2; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.0 to 1.6 per tandard deviation [4.8 μmol/l] increae in erum homocyteine). Concluion Elevated erum homocyteine i weakly aociated with increaed odd of retinal emboli in thi older population-baed tudy.
