Abstract :
Purpoe To decribe variou morphologic pattern of diabetic macular edema (DME) demontrated by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and correlate them with viual acuity. Deign Retropective, obervational, cae erie. Method A retropective review of all patient with DME who underwent OCT evaluation and met the tudy incluion criteria between May 1998 and December 2002 at the Cole Eye Intitute wa performed. The OCT can were evaluated for the preence of diffue retinal thickening (DRT), cytoid macular edema (CME), poterior hyaloidal traction (PHT), erou retinal detachment (RD), and traction retinal detachment (TRD). Additionally, the retinal thickne wa meaured and viual acuity evaluated. Reult Two hundred eventy-ix OCT can of 164 eye of 119 patient were identified. OCT revealed five morphologic pattern of DME: DRT (269, 97%), CME (152, 55%), RD without PHT (19, 7.0%), PHT without TRD (35, 12.7%), and PHT with TRD (8, 2.9%). Mean retinal thickne varied depending on the morphologic pattern. The mean viual acuitie (nellen equivalent) alo varied between group. Increaing retinal thickne in all pattern wa ignificantly correlated with wore viual acuity (P < .005). The OCT pattern containing CME (P = .01) and PHT without TRD (P = .02) were alo ignificantly aociated with wore viion. Concluion DME exhibit at leat five different morphologic pattern on OCT. There i a ignificant correlation between retinal thickne and viual acuity.
