Efficacy of Oral Antiviral Prophylaxi in Preventing Ocular Herpe implex Viru Recurrence in Patient With and Without elf-Reported Atopy Original Reearch Article

Purpoe To compare the efficacy of oral antiviral prophylactic treatment for herpe implex viru (HV) recurrence in patient with and without elf-reported atopy. Deign Retropective cohort comparative tudy. Method etting: Cornea ervice, Will Eye Hopital. tudy population: Patient who preented with previouly diagnoed ocular HV between March 2003 and March 2004. From 244 patient invited, 54 patient (58 eye) were included. One hundred and ninety patient were excluded according to excluion criteria: no active epiode during follow-up, immunouppreion, le than one year of follow-up, or previou hitory of penetrating keratoplaty. The Quetionnaire regarding hitory of atopic dieae, conider: preence of allergic rhiniti, athma or atopic dermatiti, and chart review of ocular hitory. main outcome meaure: Incidence of all type of HV recurrence with and without antiviral prophylaxi within each group and between group. HV epiode were claified into infectiou, inflammatory, and mixed for analyi. Reult Atopic/nonatopic (P value): mean follow-up without prophylaxi 8.1 (± 8.2)/7.3 year (± 8.6) (P = .71); mean follow-up with prophylaxi 2.9 (± 2.3)/2.6 year (± 2.2) (P = .51); the effect of prophylaxi ignificantly reduced the all recurrence in both group except in the inflammatory recurrence in the atopic group and in the mixed recurrence in both group. Prophylaxi decreaed infectiou epiode by 44% in nonatopic and 76% in atopic and decreaed inflammatory manifetation by 69% in the nonatopic group and 8% in the atopic group. Concluion Antiviral prophylaxi for HV recurrence wa more effective in reducing infection in atopic and le effective in reducing inflammatory epiode in atopic veru nonatopic.
