The Expreion of Cyclooxygenae 2 in Retinoblatoma: Primary Enucleated Eye and Enucleation After Conervative Treatment Original Reearch Article

Purpoe To provide inight into the relationhip between cyclooxygenae-2 (COX-2) expreion and hitopathologic feature of retinoblatoma pecimen treated either by primary or econdary enucleation. Deign Laboratory invetigation. Method Twenty-five retinoblatoma pecimen received between 1994 and 2003 were retrieved for thi tudy from the Ocular Pathology Regitry, Federal Univerity of ão Paulo, Brazil and the Henry C. Witelon Ocular Pathology Laboratory and Regitry, McGill Univerity, Montreal, Canada. The pecimen retrieved were divided into two group: Group I, enucleation wa performed a a form of primary treatment (n = 15) and Group II, enucleation after failure of conervative treatment (n = 10). Patient information and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded pecimen were obtained. New ection of thee block were ued for hematoxylin and eoin tain and for immunoaay uing a monoclonal moue anti–COX-2 antibody. Two independent ophthalmic pathologit reviewed all of the microlide. Reult Twenty-three pecimen (92%) preented a high expreion of COX-2 (15 in Group I; eight in Group II) and there wa no tatitical difference in COX-2 expreion between the two group (P = .07). However, all pecimen expreed COX-2 to a different degree. The area of tumor invaion were poitive for COX-2 in 87.5% of the two group. Concluion Mot retinoblatoma pecimen revealed a high COX-2 expreion. Future tudie will be neceary to correlate the high expreion of COX-2 in retinoblatoma and a poible applicability of anti–COX-2 medication in the treatment of thee tumor.
