Abstract :
Purpoe To identify poible rik factor for the development of poterior vitreou detachment (PVD). Deign Retropective cae-control tudy. Method A total of 138 cae with PVD and 114 age-matched control were accrued from two different ite. Demographic, medical, ocular, and lifetyle data were obtained through chart review, quetionnaire, and clinical examination. A 108-item emiquantitative food frequency quetionnaire wa alo ued to etimate macro- and micronutrient intake. Univariate and multivariate regreion analye were employed to identify variable ignificantly aociated with the main outcome meaure of PVD. ubgroup analyi of gender-pecific variable wa performed. Reult Among all patient, multivariate regreion analyi demontrated female gender (odd ratio [OR] = 2.01, P = .016), myopic refraction (OR = 4.32, P < .0005), and higher intake of vitamin B6 (OR = 2.61, P = .001) to be aociated with PVD after controlling for age. In the ubgroup analyi of women, menopaue (OR = 18.2, P < .0005), myopic refraction (OR = 3.42, P = .01), and higher intake of vitamin B6 (OR = 3.92, P = .005) were aociated with PVD. pecifically, there wa a ignificant aociation between vitamin B6 and PVD amongt premenopaual women but not amongt potmenopaual women. Concluion An aociation between PVD and menopaue ha not been documented previouly. We upect that high etrogen level een in premenopaual women may be protective againt PVD and that hormonal change aociated with menopaue may lead to change in the vitreou, predipoing to PVD. Higher level of intake of vitamin B6 were alo aociated with the development of PVD in premenopaual women poibly through an anti-etrogen effect. Thee finding hould be invetigated further with propective tudie.
