Abstract :
Purpoe To tudy clinical and microbiologic characteritic of corneal infection following penetrating keratoplaty (PK). Deign Retropective cae erie. Method Medical record of patient who preented to Duke Univerity Eye Center from January 1, 1999 to July 1, 2005 with microbial keratiti after PK were reviewed. Reult Forty-four corneal graft infection were reviewed. Mean interval between PK and infection wa 26.3 month. Aociated condition included broken or looe uture (10, 22.7%) and topical corticoteroid (34, 77.3%). taphylococcal (12, 20.7%) and Peudomonal (7, 12.1%) pecie were common pathogen, and fungal pecie accounted for eight (18.2%) infection. Twelve patient (27.3%) had polymicrobial infection. Thirteen patient (29.5%) underwent repeat PK. Mean potinfection viual acuity at lat follow-up wa 20/400. Concluion Microbial infection within corneal graft can occur anytime in the potoperative coure and are aociated with broken uture and the ue of topical corticoteroid. The diverity of pathogenic organim, antibiotic reitance, and the potential for poor outcome upport aggreive management of thee infection.
