Prevention of Expoure of Porou Orbital Implant Following Enucleation Original Reearch Article

Purpoe To invetigate effectivene of adding a cleral patch graft on a Vicryl meh-wrapped porou orbital implant to prevent expoure following enucleation. Deign A retropective, comparative, nonrandomized tudy. Method From October 1996 to February 2006, 74 conecutive patient (74 ocket) who received porou orbital implant primarily or econdarily after enucleation at National Taiwan Univerity Hopital (72 cae) and at Far Eatern Memorial Hopital (2 cae) were collected. Patient demographic, ocular diagnoi, the urgical technique, prior ophthalmic urgery, type, covering, and ize of the implant, follow-up period, and complication aociated with peg and implant were recorded. Group 1 patient received a Vicryl meh-wrapped implant without a cleral patch graft. Group 2 patient received anterior capping with a cleral patch on the Vicryl meh-wrapped implant. Reult Of 74 identified cae, 12 were excluded for inufficient follow-up. The 62 remaining cae had more than a two-year follow-up. There were two implant expoure (12%, two of 17) in group 1. Retroauricular myoperioteal graft and cleral patch were ued to repair expoed implant uccefully. No expoure wa noted in group 2 (n = 45). A ignificant between-group difference in expoure rate wa found (P = .02). Early conjunctival dehicence followed by pontaneou healing occurred in three group 2 patient. Concluion cleral patch graft and Vicryl meh can act a duplicate barrier between anterior urface of implant and overlying oft tiue. The modified wrapping technique prevent porou implant from expoure effectively.
