Abstract :
Purpoe
To decribe the lo of light perception and other viual experience encountered during different tage of laer in itu keratomileui (LAIK) and to compare patient’ experience between LAIK performed with the Zyoptix XP microkeratome and Intralae laer.
Deign
Propective, randomized, elf-matched clinical tudy.
Method
Forty-one patient (82 eye) had bilateral LAIK with the corneal flap fahioned by Zyoptix XP microkeratome in one eye and Intralae laer in the other. They were interviewed potoperatively with a tandardized quetionnaire about their intraoperative viual experience, including light perception and ability to ee the red fixation light.
Reult
During both vacuum uction and corneal flap fahioning, a higher proportion of eye in the Zyoptix XP microkeratome group lot light perception compared with the Intralae group (85.4% v 39.0% and 90.2% v 61.0%; P < .001 and P = .004, repectively). Patient alo aw flahe, variou color, movement, the urgeon’ hand or finger, and the urgeon during urgery, and there wa no difference in thee viual experience between the Zyoptix XP microkeratome and Intralae group. Overall, eight (19.5%) of 41 patient were frightened by their intraoperative viual experience during LAIK.
Concluion
Patient retain light perception during mot tage of LAIK except during uction and fahioning of the corneal flap, when ome are temporarily unable to ee. Many alo experience variou viual enation intraoperatively, and 19.5% of patient are frightened by their viual experience.
