Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate etablihed pterygia uing our newly developed ultraviolet fluorecence photography (UVFP) ytem.

Propective obervational cae erie.
Method
etting: Prince of Wale Hopital, ydney, Autralia. tudy population: Fourteen patient (both eye) attending the Ophthalmology Clinic at Prince of Wale Hopital for aement of their etablihed pterygia. There were eight men and ix women, with an age range of 26 to 62 year. A total of 15 (75%) of 20 had primary pterygia, and five (25%) of 20 had recurrent pterygia. There were no pecific excluion criteria. obervation procedure: Ultraviolet and tandard (control) photograph were taken of the naal and temporal interpalpebral region bilaterally. main outcome meaure: The preence of etablihed pterygia detected by tandard photography and the correponding preence and pattern of area of fluorecence detected by UVFP.
Reult
In the 14 patient, 20 etablihed pterygia were identified on tandard photography. On UVFP, four pattern of fluorecence of etablihed pterygia were identified. Of the 20 pterygia, ix (30%) of 20 demontrated fluorecence at the leading edge of the pterygium, even (35%) of 20 demontrated fluorecence at the limbu, three (15%) of 20 demontrated fluorecence at both the leading edge and the limbu, and four (20%) of 20 demontrated no viible fluorecence.
Concluion
In thi tudy, we decribe pattern of fluorecence in etablihed pterygia by UVFP. We hypotheize that the area of fluorecence repreent area of cellular activity within the pterygium. The pattern of fluorecence may be ueful to further undertand of pterygium growth and pathogenei.
