Purpoe
To highlight the challenge of potmarketing urveillance for drug-related advere event in the practice of ophthalmology.
Deign
A retropective review of the medical literature and potmarketing urveillance databae.
Method
MEDLINE literature review of ildenafil-aociated or amiodarone-aociated optic neuropathy and chloramphenicol-aociated blood dycraia.
Reult
ildenafil, amiodarone, and chloramphenicol may all caue advere ocular event; however, the data are not concluive.
Concluion
Report in peer-reviewed medical journal may be proven incorrect over time. For drug-induced advere ocular event, there i little true cience after the drug reache the marketplace, o the percentage of incorrect concluion may be high. Clinician hould be wary of report of advere ocular effect until data are confirmed by multiple author over the long-term. Even o, pontaneou report from potmarketing urveillance databae may be the firt and only ignal of an advere ocular event.
