Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine the incidence of retinal detachment reulting from macular hole (MHRD) in fellow eye.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
The medical record of 59 normal fellow eye of cae with MHRD diagnoed between 1994 and 2004 at Oaka Roai Hopital were retropectively reviewed. Thirty-nine of the 59 fellow eye were highly myopic. The average follow-up period wa 42 month with a range of even to 132 month. The incidence of MHRD in fellow eye, and the interval between the onet of MHRD in the firt eye and the fellow eye were determined. The Kaplan-Meier method wa ued to etimate the probability of the fellow eye developing MHRD at 18 month and five year, and the probability of high myopia in the development of MHRD with log-rank tet.
Reult
Five eye (8.5%) developed MHRD during the follow-up period. All affected eye were highly myopic, and the incidence of MHRD among the highly myopic fellow eye wa 12.8%. The average interval wa 51 month. The Kaplan-Meier etimated probability of the fellow eye developing MHRD wa 3.7% (0% to 8.7% for 95% confidence interval [CI]) at 18 month and 8.0% (0% to 17.7% for 95% CI) at five year. The probability of the fellow eye with high myopia developing MHRD wa ignificantly higher than that of eye without high myopia (P = .0304).
Concluion
The high incidence of MHRD developing in the fellow eye indicate that the fellow eye hould be examined and followed carefully.
