Abstract :
Purpoe To evaluate plama dehydroepiandroterone ulphate (DHEA) level in patient diagnoed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and control. Deign Cae-controlled, propective, comparative noninterventional tudy. Method Thi tudy involved 32 men and 35 women with exudative AMD, 37 men and 38 women with nonexudative AMD, and 32 men and 32 women of an age-matched control group. The Wiconin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading ytem wa ued to ae the everity of AMD leion. DHEA level were meaured and compared according to a gender baed ubdiviion. Analyi of variance wa ued to ae the aociation between DHEA and AMD. Linear regreion model wa ued to examine the relation among DHEA level and AMD everity cale. Reult Mean ± D of DHEA level in exudative AMD, nonexudative AMD, and control in men wa 2.67 ± 0.68 μmol/l, 2.89 ± 0.95 μmol/l, and 4.43 ± 1.44 μmol/l, repectively (P = .001), and in women wa 1.64 ± 0.72 μmol/l, 1.85 ± 0.73 μmol/l, and 2.78 ± 0.91 μmol/l, repectively (P = .001). Pot hoc Tukey analye revealed a ignificant reduction in erum DHEA level in both AMD group, compared with control for men and women (P = .001), while no difference wa found between AMD group in both men and women (P = .668 and 0.49, repectively). Regreion analye revealed an invere correlation among erum DHEA level and AMD everity cale both in men and women (P = .006 and .007, repectively). Concluion Thi tudy ugget an invere correlation between erum DHEA level and AMD everity cale with a coniderably reduced DHEA level in AMD.
