Abstract :
Purpoe
To ae aociation between increaed erum homocyteine, low vitamin B12, low folate, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Deign
Population-baed, cro-ectional analyi.
Method
erum homocyteine, vitamin B12, and folate were meaured in 2,335 participant of the Blue Mountain Eye tudy econd urvey. AMD detected from retinal photograph included atrophic or neovacular leion.
Reult
After adjuting for age, gender, and moking in logitic regreion model, homocyteine >15 μmol/l wa aociated with an increaed likelihood of AMD in participant aged <75 year (odd ratio [OR] 3.21, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.09 to 9.43). A imilar aociation wa found for vitamin B12 <125 pmol/l (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.08 to 4.89) among all participant. In participant with homocyteine ≤15 μmol/l, low erum B12 wa aociated with nearly four-fold higher odd of AMD (OR 3.74, 95% CI 1.06 to 13.24). Folate wa not tatitically ignificantly aociated with AMD.
Concluion
Increaed homocyteine and low vitamin B12 were independently aociated with an increaed rik of AMD in thi tudy population.
