Abstract
Purpoe
To meaure the prevalence of toxoplamic retinal car in a young univeritary population.
Deign
Obervational cohort tudy.
Method
The tudy wa performed at the “Univeridad del Quindío,” Armenia (Colombia), from November to December 2005. Indirect ocular funducopy by ophthalmologit wa performed in tudent, teacher, and adminitrative taff between 18 and 45 year of age without previou ocular pathology. The diagnotic criteria were baed on the obervation of typical funducopic leion and the detection of poitive immunoglobulin (Ig) G anti-Toxoplama antibodie.
Reult
From a total of 200 people, 12 (6%) had inactive retinochoroidal car. Two of them had viual acuity of <20/200 and one of 20/70. Enzyme-Linked Immunoorbent Aay (ELIA) IgG and IgM anti-Toxoplama wa performed in nine patient, all of whom were poitive for IgG and one for IgM.
Concluion
A relatively high prevalence of retinochoroidal car (6%) wa detected in a young univeritary population in Colombia.
