  • Abstract
Purpoe To report confocal microcopic obervation of characteritic corneal endothelial leion in a patient with preumed cytomegaloviru (CMV) corneal endotheliiti. Deign Cae report. Method A 77-year-old, immunocompetent man wa admitted with corneal edema, keratic precipitate, and coin-haped leion in the right eye. Confocal microcopy wa performed to examine the corneal endothelium. Polymerae chain reaction (PCR) wa ued to identify viral DNA in an aqueou humor ample. Reult CMV DNA wa detected by PCR. Confocal microcopy howed large corneal endothelial cell with an area of high reflection in the nucleu urrounded by a halo of low reflection. Thi “owl’ eye” morphology i characteritic of CMV infection. Topical and intravenou ganciclovir treatment reulted in rapid reolution of the corneal precipitate and edema, followed by diappearance of the owl’ eye morphology. Concluion Confocal microcopy can detect the owl’ eye morphology in the corneal endothelium of patient with preumed CMV corneal endotheliiti.
