  • Abstract
    Purpoe To determine the prevalence, microbiological profile, and prognoi for bacterial keratiti after primary pediatric penetrating keratoplaty (PKP). Deign Retropective cae erie. Method Retropective review of all cae of primary PKP performed in children 12 year of age or younger at the King Khaled Eye pecialit Hopital between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 2005 and incluion of all potoperative cae of culture-poitive, bacterial keratiti. Reult Culture-poitive bacterial keratiti developed in 35 (17.3%) of 202 primary keratoplatie. Gram-poitive organim were cultured in 91.4% of infected eye and accounted for 77.6% of iolate. treptococcu pneumoniae wa the mot common organim. No eye achieved a final viual acuity of 20/40 or better, while 65.7% had hand motion or wore. Concluion Bacterial keratiti after pediatric keratoplaty i a eriou complication that i aociated with a high rik of graft failure and poor viual outcome.
