Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate the potential benefit of microperimetry and preferential hyperacuity perimeter (PHP) to document viual performance objectively in patient with macular hole and macular pucker undergoing macular urgery.
Deign
Obervational cae erie.
Method
In 19 patient with macular hole and 18 with macular pucker, bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA; in logarithm of the minimum angle of reolution unit), central retinal enitivity, and preence and extent of metamorphopia were documented before and four and 12 week after urgery. Macular enitivity (mean enitivity decibel [dB], tability of fixation) wa determined uing MP1 microperimetry (Nidek, Padova, Italy). The PreView-PHP (Carl Zei Meditec, Dublin, California, UA) wa ued to quantify metamorphopia.
Reult
Before urgery, mean BCVA wa 0.68 ± 0.25 (macular hole) and 0.58 ± 0.25 (macular pucker). Microperimetry demontrated a mean retinal enitivity of 11.3 ± 2.5 dB (macular hole) and 10.7 ± 2.8 dB (macular pucker). Twelve week after urgery, mean BCVA improved to 0.53 ± 0.26 (macular hole) and 0.33 ± 0.26 (macular pucker; P = .042 and P = .004). Accordingly, retinal enitivity increaed ignificantly with 12.8 ± 1.9 dB (macular hole) and 12.7 ± 2.5 dB (macular pucker; P = .04 and P = .02) a well a tability of fixation. At 12 week, 47.3% of macular hole eye and 66.7% of macular pucker eye improved in BCVA, but a ignificantly higher number (68.4% [macular hole] and 77.8% [macular pucker]) demontrated improvement in microperimetry reult. PHP reult howed no ignificant change of cotoma, patient reliability, or preence of metamorphopia at any interval.
Concluion
A higher number of patient improved in microperimetry than in viual acuity teting. Therefore, microperimetry highlight the value of functional macular mapping for thee patient and indicate that BCVA may underetimate functional benefit of urgery.
