Abstract :
Purpoe
To elucidate the ditinct role of the intraoperative ue of mitomycin C (MMC) on endothelial cell denity after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in human eye.
Deign
Propective, double-maked, randomized clinical trial.
Method
One eye of 15 patient wa treated with PRK with intraoperative ue of topical 0.02% MMC (15 econd), wherea the fellow eye wa treated with Epipoli laer in itu keratomileui (Epi-LAIK) in random order. Corneal confocal microcopy wa performed in all eye preoperatively and at one, three, ix, and 12 month after the urgery. Moreover, three endothelial image were acquired in each of 15 preoperative-normal eye to evaluate the repeatability of meauring endothelial cell denity. Repeated meaure analyi of variance wa ued to compare the temporal variation of endothelial cell denity between the two technique and the change of endothelial cell denity over time.
Reult
The coefficient of repeatability of endothelial cell count wa 148 cell/mm2. Preoperative endothelial cell denity wa not ignificantly different between the two group (P = .82). Moreover, the effect of the treatment on the temporal variation of endothelial cell denity wa inignificant (P = .83), wherea the difference between the preoperative and the potoperative endothelial cell denitie reached tatitical ignificance (P ≤ .05). Nonethele, incluion of the repeatability of the intrument on the analyi diminihed thee ignificant difference (P > .05).
Concluion
The prophylactic intraoperative application of MMC (up to 15 econd) after PRK doe not eem to affect the endothelial cell denity.
