Abstract :
Purpoe
To examine the influence of optic material on poterior capule opacification (PCO) by comparing PCO and viual function between eye with an acrylic intraocular len (IOL) and thoe with a ilicone IOL of the ame optic deign and with the ame haptic.
Deign
Randomized clinical trial.
Method
One hundred patient cheduled for phacoemulification urgery underwent implantation of an acrylic IOL (AMO enar; AR40e) in one eye and implantation of a ilicone IOL (ClariFlex) of the ame optic deign and loop in the fellow eye. Eighty-nine patient (89%) remained for analyi. The PCO value wa meaured uing the cheimpflug videophotography ytem at one, three, ix, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 month potoperatively. The incidence of eye that required a neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laer capulotomy wa examined; viual acuity and contrat enitivity with and without a glare ource were alo evaluated.
Reult
The mean PCO value did not increae ignificantly during follow-up in either the acrylic or ilicone IOL group. When comparing the group, no tatitically ignificant difference wa found in the PCO or in the incidence of Nd:YAG capulotomy, although both tended to be lightly better in the ilicone group than in the acrylic group. There wa alo no ignificant difference between the group in viual acuity or in photopic and meopic contrat enitivity with or without glare.
Concluion
When acrylic and ilicone IOL are of the ame optic deign and with the ame haptic, the optic material doe not influence the development of PCO enough to impair viual function.
