Abstract :
Purpoe To evaluate the outcome of imple mechanical debridement for the management of anterior baement membrane dytrophy (ABMD) in a cohort of patient treated primarily for viual ymptom. Deign Retropective, obervational cae erie. Method etting: ingle center. tudy population: eventy-four eye of 55 patient treated with mechanical epithelial debridement over a 15-year period. obervation procedure: We recorded ymptom, pre- and potoperative bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA), urgical technique, complication, and evidence of dieae recurrence. main outcome meaure: Mean bet-corrected logMAR acuity and refractive error, compared by uing paired t tet or Wilcoxon igned-rank tet. Interval to recurrence of ABMD wa determined by uing Kaplan-Meier etimate. Reult Mean patient age wa 74 year, and 80% were female. Viual difficulty wa reported by the patient before the procedure in 61 eye (82%), and eroion ymptom alone were noted before the procedure in the remaining 13 eye. Mean BCVA improved from 20/44 before urgery to 20/30 (P = .0001) at the early follow-up viit and 20/33 (P = .0001) at the lat follow-up (mean = 33 month). The mean refractive pherical equivalent changed –0.6 diopter (range, –4.75 to +2.0 diopter). No infection or peritent epithelial defect occurred. The mot common potoperative complication wa ubepithelial haze, occurring in 19 eye (26%). The five-year cumulative probability of recurrence of ABMD wa 44.7%. Concluion Our reult with thi imple technique are comparable to outcome reported with other procedure ued to treat ABMD. We recommend manual debridement a an effective option for ABMD affecting viual acuity.
