Abstract :
Purpoe
To examine reported clinical trial on herpe implex viru epithelial keratiti a a cae tudy for the configuration and poible motive of overlapping publication in the ophthalmic literature.
Deign
Cro-ectional bibliometric urvey.
Method
One hundred and forty-four report of 98 randomized clinical trial that formed the framework for a ytematic review on dendritic and geographic keratiti were aembled by electronic and manual earching of biomedical journal and tranaction, excluding meeting abtract. Overlapping report were identified by comparing method and reult. Main article giving the mot detailed reult among overlapping report were contrated with trial report without duplication. Annual citation rate ince publication were etimated from the number of time each report wa cited by ubequent cientific article indexed in an online citation databae.
Reult
ixty-one article were publihed once, while 83 article overlapped in 23 cluter, of which 14 (50%) lacked bibliographic cro-reference. Of 55 econdary report, 34 (62%) had a maller ample ize than their correponding main report. econdary article were le likely to appear in an ophthalmological publication than main report (P < .001) and were later cited le often (P = .01). Compared to trial report publihed once, main article with an overlapping report had a ignificantly higher citation rate (P = .04).
Concluion
Overlapping publication of therapeutic trial on herpetic keratiti often had undicloed or fragmentary interconnection. ubequent author cited article having an overlapping report more often than trial publihed once.
