  • Abstract
Purpoe To invetigate the penetration of ofloxacin and moxifloxacin into the aqueou and vitreou after topical adminitration one hour before vitrectomy urgery. Deign Propective, randomized, double-blind cae erie tudy. Method Twenty-even patient undergoing vitrectomy were randomized to receive either topical ofloxacin 0.3% or moxifloxacin 0.5% every 10 minute for one hour before urgery. Aqueou and vitreou ample were obtained and analyzed uing high-performance liquidation chromatography. Reult The moxifloxacin aqueou (1.576 ± 0.745 μg/ml) and vitreou (0.225 ± 0.013 μg/ml) level were ignificantly higher than the ofloxacin aqueou (0.816 ± 0.504 μg/ml) (P = .0009) and vitreou (0.225 ± 0.013 μg/ml) [P = .0054] level, repectively. The mean moxifloxacin aqueou and vitreou level exceeded the minimum inhibitory concentration for 90% of iolate (MIC90) for a wide variety of bacteria implicated in endophthalmiti. In contrat, the aqueou level of ofloxacin exceeded the MIC90 of only a few organim. Concluion Moxifloxacin applied every 10 minute during the hour before vitrectomy penetrated the eye ignificantly better than ofloxacin.
