Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate the effect of mechanical trauma induced by cilia on the conjunctival epithelium in patient with epiblepharon or entropion and to evaluate change in epithelium after urgical correction in patient with entropion.
Deign
Cae-control tudy.
Method
One hundred and even eye of 61 patient were enrolled in thi tudy and were divided into three group: the epiblepharon group (n = 59), the entropion group (n = 17), and the age-matched control group for the epiblepharon group (n = 31). Impreion cytologic pecimen were obtained from naal and temporal bulbar conjunctiva of the epiblepharon and control group immediately after the induction of general anetheia. In the entropion group, thee were obtained before and one month after urgical correction. Conjunctival change were graded uing the Teng method and goblet cell denitie were compared.
Reult
Cytologic core were ignificantly higher in the epiblepharon group than in the control group (P < .001), and goblet cell denitie of naal and temporal conjunctiva were ignificantly lower in the epiblepharon group than in the control group (P = .044 and P = .018, repectively). In the entropion group, potoperative core were ignificantly lower than preoperative core in both conjunctival area (P = .033 and P = .003, repectively). No tatitically ignificant difference wa found between naal and temporal conjunctiva in the three group.
Concluion
The peritent mechanical trauma by cilia in patient with epiblepharon or entropion can induce quamou metaplaia of the conjunctival epithelium. However, thee conjunctival change can be revered by urgical correction.
