Abstract
Purpoe
To analyze in vitro antibiotic uceptibility of bacterial iolate from patient with bacterial keratiti at the National Taiwan Univerity Hopital over the pat 12 year.
Deign
Retropective cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Medical record were reviewed for patient with culture-proven bacterial keratiti at the National Taiwan Univerity Hopital from January 1994 to December 2005. Microbial iolation and in vitro antibiotic uceptibility were analyzed.
Reult
A total of 272 pathogen were iolated from 254 eye. Peudomona pecie were the mot commonly iolated organim (46.7%), followed by taphylococcu pecie (11%), Propionibacterium pecie (8.1%), treptococcu pecie (7.6%), and nontuberculou Mycobacteria (6.6%). There wa no ignificant change in antibiotic uceptibility in the train of taphylococcu, treptococcu, Peudomona, or nontuberculou Mycobacteria during the tudy period. From 1994 to 2005, 81.8% of the gram-negative organim were uceptible to the combination of cefazolin and gentamicin, wherea 95.8% were uceptible to ciprofloxacin (P < .001). For all bacterial iolate, 83.7% and 89.7% were uceptible to the combination of cefazolin and gentamicin and the combination of cefazolin and ciprofloxacin, repectively (P < .001).
Concluion
There wa no increae in drug reitance in train of Peudomona, taphylococcu, treptococcu, or nontuberculou Mycobacteria from 1994 to 2005. Ciprofloxacin i a more efficaciou choice than the combination of cefazolin and gentamicin for gram-negative bacterial keratiti in Taiwan. The combination of cefazolin and ciprofloxacin i an effective empirical therapeutic regimen for bacterial keratiti.
