Abstract :
Purpoe To meaure the incidence of par planiti in a community-baed population and to report clinical feature, complication, and viual prognoi. Deign Population-baed, retropective, 20-year cohort tudy. Method Multicenter tudy uing the Rocheter Epidemiology Project medical record linkage ytem, which allow analyi of almot all patient within Olmted County, Minneota, with a given medical condition. Databae were earched to identify all patient with par planiti from January 1, 1985 through December 31, 2004. Forty-ix eye of 25 patient were evaluated. Reult Mean follow-up wa 14.3 year. The incidence of par planiti wa 2.077 per 100,000 peron (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.43 to 2.62). The mot common complication were epiretinal membrane (ERM) in 17 eye (36%), cataract in 14 eye (30.4%), and cytoid macular edema (CME) in 12 eye (26.1%). Mean viual acuity after 10 year of follow-up wa 20/30, with 18 of 24 patient maintaining a viual acuity of 20/40 or better. One-third of patient maintained normal viual acuity without requiring treatment. Concluion The viual prognoi of par planiti i relatively good, with 75% of patient maintaining a viual acuity of 20/40 or better after 10 year. Many patient with mild dieae do not require treatment. A ubet of patient, however, experience evere dieae with evere viion lo depite treatment. The rate of moking and multiple cleroi in patient with par planiti i much higher than that of the general population.
