Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate a poible aociation between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary acquired naolacrimal duct obtruction (PANDO).
Deign
Retropective, comparative tudy.
Method
The tudy group conited of 209 conecutive eye (178 patient) whoe lacrimal ytem had PANDO in patient more than 50 year of age during the 10-year tudy period. The control group conited of 183 conecutive eye (183 patient) that underwent cataract urgery during the ame period. The main outcome meaure were prevalence of POAG in tudy and control group and the effect of topical glaucoma therapy ue profile on PANDO prevalence. Medical record of all patient included in the tudy were reviewed. Data collected included demographic detail and hitory and characteritic of POAG treatment.
Reult
The prevalence of POAG in the PANDO group (23%) wa ignificantly higher than that of the control group (6%; P < .0001). The average hitory of POAG wa longer in the PANDO group (14.10 ± 5.59 year) compared with the control group (9.55 ± 7.23 year; P = .025). The average number of topical glaucoma therapy drug per glaucomatou eye in the PANDO group (1.58 ± 0.92) wa ignificantly higher than that of the control group (0.73 ± 0.90; P = .002). Bilateral naolacrimal duct obtruction (NLDO) wa more common among glaucoma patient in the PANDO group (38.23%) compared with nonglaucoma patient in the ame group (11.80%; P = .0002). A ignificantly higher percentage of glaucoma patient in the PANDO group (69%) were treated with timolol, compared with glaucoma patient in the control group (18%; P = .005).
Concluion
Chronic ue of timolol-containing topical glaucoma therapy preparation in glaucoma patient i aociated with an increaed rik for the development of NLDO. Large-cale propective tudie are needed to acertain thi aociation.
