Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare the efficacy of topical levofloxacin in combination with povidone–iodine irrigation v povidone–iodine (PVI) alone in reducing conjunctival bacteria.
Deign
Propective, randomized, controlled trial.
Method
One hundred and forty eye of 140 patient cheduled to undergo intraocular urgery eye were randomized to either group 1 or 2 (70 each). Wherea group 1 eye had no prophylactic antibiotic, eye in group 2 received topical treatment with one drop of 0.5% levofloxacin four time on the day before urgery. Both group underwent irrigation of the fornice with 1% PVI. Conjunctival wab were inoculated on olid and broth culture media to determine bacterial growth.
Reult
Of 132 eye evaluated, baeline culture analyi in thioglycolate demontrated poitive culture reult in 55 (84.6%) of 65 eye from group 1, imilar to 55 (82.1%) of 67 eye in group 2 (P = .697). Before urgery, 57 (87.7%) of 65 eye in group 1 had poitive culture reult, compared with 50 (74.6%) of 67 eye in group 2 (P = .055). After irrigation with PVI, 20 (30.8 %) of 65 eye in group 1 had poitive culture reult, compared with only eight (11.9%) of 67 eye in group 2 (P = .008). After urgery, 15 (23.1%) of 65 eye in group 1 and ix (9.0%) of 67 eye in group 2 had poitive culture reult (P = .027).
Concluion
Our tudy how an enhanced effect of uing topical levofloxacin in combination with PVI irrigation to reduce conjunctival bacteria in patient undergoing intraocular urgery.
