Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare the prevalence of different type and denitie of age-related cataract in ubject with high myopia and emmetropia in an Indian urban clinic-baed population.
Deign
Propective, obervational, clinic-baed cae-control tudy.
Method
An obervational cae-control tudy of 800 healthy eye wa undertaken at Iladevi Cataract & IOL Reearch Center, Ahmedabad, India. ubject with high myopia (axial length [AXL], ≥ 26.0 mm; n = 400 eye) and thoe with emmetropia (AXL, 21.0 to 23.99 mm) were examined (n = 400 eye). The type of cataract wa categorized a: nuclear, cortical, or poterior ubcapular cataract (PC). Nuclear denity wa meaured baed on the Emery and Little claification.
Reult
In all the age group (40 year of age or more), nuclear cataract wa encountered more often in ubject with high myopia (odd ratio, 3.8; 95% confidence interval, 2.9 to 5.2; P < .001); PC and mixed cataract were encountered frequently in ubject with emmetropia (P < .001). Prevalence of nuclear cataract wa higher in ubject with high myopia with increaing AXL when compared with other type of cataract (P < .001). In all the age group, the nuclear denity wa ignificantly higher than grade 3 in ubject with high myopia when compared with thoe with emmetropia (P < .001 in thoe younger than 70 year; P = .003 in thoe older than 70 year).
Concluion
Nuclear cataract wa aociated trongly with high axial myopia. The denity of the cataract wa higher in the high myopia group. No aociation wa oberved between PC or cortical cataract and high axial myopia.
