Abstract :
Purpoe
To determine the prevalence and characteritic of binocular involvement among patient with Acanthamoeba keratiti.
Deign
Retropective cae erie.
Method
Rik factor and outcome of bilateral infection were explored among conecutive cae of Acanthamoeba keratiti diagnoed at a ingle intitution from 1997 through mid 2007.
Reult
Fifty eye were confirmed to have Acanthamoeba keratiti by microbiologic or hitopathologic teting; two-third occurred during a regional outbreak beginning in 2004. Five (11%) of 45 patient had infection of both eye, including three with concurrent involvement and two with ucceive dieae of the contralateral cornea. Three binocularly infected patient ued oft contact lene, and two wore rigid ga-permeable lene. Nine of 10 eye achieved viual acuity of 20/30 or better after antiamebic therapy.
Concluion
Bilateral Acanthamoeba keratiti i an infectiou complication of contact len wear. With laboratory confirmation, viion often can be retored with medical therapy.
