Abstract :
Purpoe To decribe the prevalence and 15-year cumulative incidence of and rik factor for reticular druen. Deign Population-baed propective tudy. Method Four thouand nine hundred and twenty-ix peron, 43 to 86 year of age, were included between 1988 and 1990, of whom 3,684, 2,764, and 2,119 participated in five-, 10-, and 15-year follow-up examination, repectively, in Beaver Dam, Wiconin. Main outcome meaure included prevalence and 15-year incidence of reticular druen determined by grading tereocopic color fundu photograph. Reult The prevalence at baeline and the 15-year cumulative incidence in either eye of reticular druen wa 0.7% and 3.0%, repectively. The 15-year incidence of reticular druen varied with age from 0.4% in thoe 43 to 54 year of age to 6.6% in thoe 75 year or older at baeline (P < .001). In a multivariate model, while controlling for age, rik factor tatitically ignificantly aociated with increaed rik of incident reticular druen included: being female (odd ratio [OR], 2.8), current moking (OR v never, 1.9), le education (OR per category, 1.7), B-vitamin complex ue (OR v none, 2.5), ingle vitamin B (OR v none, 2.9), hitory of teroid eye drop ue (OR, 5.9), glaucoma (OR, 2.8), and more evere druen type (e.g., oft inditinct druen; OR, 1.4), wherea diabete (OR, 0.1) at baeline wa aociated with decreaed rik. Right eye with reticular druen at baeline had higher cumulative incidence of geographic atrophy (21% v 9%) and exudative age-related macular degeneration [AMD] (20% v 10%) compared with eye with oft inditinct druen. Concluion Thi population-baed tudy document the long-term cumulative incidence of reticular druen and it rik factor and how it aociation with a high rik of incident late AMD.
