Abstract :
Purpoe
To examine the effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin on ubfoveal or juxtafoveal choroidal neovacularization (CNV) econdary to pathologic myopia in Japanee patient and to compare the viual outcome of PDT-treated patient with that of age-matched and viual acuity-matched untreated control.
Deign
Propective, open-label, conecutive, interventional cae erie.
Method
We propectively followed up 43 eye of 42 conecutive patient with pathologic myopia (>6 diopter or axial length >26.5 mm) who received PDT for myopic CNV. In addition, the viual outcome of thee patient who were followed up for more than one year were compared with thoe of age- and initial viual acuity-matched untreated control.
Reult
The average follow-up wa 15.0 ± 7.0 month. Patient received an average of 1.40 ± 0.73 treatment during follow-up, and 30 eye (69.8%) required only one treatment. The bet-corrected viual acuity (BCVA) improved by more than two nellen line in even eye (16.3%), decreaed in ix eye (14.0%), and remained table in 30 eye (69.7%). In three eye with a juxtafoveal CNV, CNV could not be detected ophthalmocopically or angiographically after PDT. tatitical analyi howed that the PDT-treated patient had ignificantly better viual acuity at one year after PDT than the age- and initial BCVA-matched untreated control.
Concluion
Thee reult indicate that PDT wa beneficial for maintaining viion in Japanee patient with myopic CNV. The viual outcome after PDT wa better than the natural coure of the dieae a determined from untreated control. The effect on chorioretinal atrophy around CNV hould be invetigated with a long-term tudy.
