  • Abstract
Purpoe To determine diurnal variation of tear menici around upper and lower eyelid in normal ubject. Deign Propective laboratory invetigation. Method Twenty young healthy Chinee ubject (10 women and 10 men; mean age, 21.3 year; range, 20 to 26 year) with no hitory of contact len wear or previouly diagnoed dry eye were recruited. A cutom-built, real-time anterior egment optical coherence tomography (OCT) intrument wa ued imultaneouly to image the upper and lower tear menici. Repeated meaurement immediately after blinking were conducted on both eye during a 24-hour period, including immediately before and after leeping. Dimenional information of the tear menici were obtained from the OCT image uing cutom oftware. Reult There were no ignificant difference between right and left menici, nor were there any difference between female and male in the lower tear menicu (P > .05, repeated-meaurement analyi of variance [ANOVA]). Although the lower tear menicu variable were correlated trongly with upper menicu variable, the lower menicu wa ignificantly greater than the upper one. ignificant diurnal variation (P < .05, repeated-meaurement ANOVA) of all meaured variable were oberved during the tudy period. Tear menici were ignificantly increaed at eye opening after overnight leep compared with the baeline before leep at 10 pm (P < .001, pot hoc tet). They remained elevated up to 10 minute after eye opening (P < .001, pot hoc tet). Concluion Real-time OCT can provide ueful information regarding the dynamic of the tear ytem. Diurnal variation of the upper and lower tear menici occur.
