  • Abstract
Purpoe To decribe rik factor for the preence of cytoid macular edema (CME) among patient preenting with intermediate uveiti. Deign Cro-ectional tudy. Method etting: ingle-center, academic practice. tudy population: Two hundred and eight patient with intermediate uveiti evaluated from July 1, 1984 through eptember 30, 2006. procedure: Clinical and demographic data were entered retropectively into a databae and analyzed. outcome meaure: Preence of CME at preentation to our clinic; rik factor for preenting with CME. Reult Of the 208 patient, 74% had bilateral intermediate uveiti, yielding 363 affected eye. Eighty-nine patient (43%) had CME in at leat one eye at the time of preentation to our clinic. After controlling for potentially confounding variable including demographic, duration of dieae, active intraocular inflammation, hitory of diabete mellitu or hypertenion, and preence of epiretinal membrane, actively moking at preentation wa aociated with a four-fold increaed rik of CME at preentation v never moking (odd ratio (OR), 3.90; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.43, 10.66; P = .008). Former moking alo appeared to increae the rik of CME at preentation in the multivariate analyi, but the reult wa of borderline tatitical ignificance (OR, 1.97; 95% CI, 0.99, 3.94; P = .055). After adjuting for confounding, there wa a 4% increaed rik of CME at preentation for each cigarette moked per day (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.01, 1.7; P = .005). Concluion CME wa a common tructural ocular complication oberved in our cohort. Current moking wa aociated with a doe-dependent increaed rik of having CME at the time of preentation to our clinic.
