Abstract :
Purpoe
To evaluate optical coherence tomography (OCT) thickne of the macula in people with diabete but minimal or no retinopathy and to compare thee finding with publihed normative data in the literature from ubject reported to have no retinal dieae.
Deign
Cro-ectional tudy.
Method
In a multicenter community- and univerity-baed practice etting, 97 ubject with diabete with no or minimal diabetic retinopathy and no central retinal thickening on clinical examination and a center point thickne of 225 μm or le on OCT (tratu OCT; Carl Zei Meditec, Dublin, California, UA) were recruited. Electronic Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy tudy bet-corrected viual acuity, even-field tereocopic color fundu photograph, and tratu OCT fat macular can were noted. Main outcome meaure were central ubfield (CF) thickne meaured on tratu OCT.
Reult
On average, CF thickne wa 201 ± 22 μm. CF thickne wa ignificantly greater in retina from men than retina from women (mean ± tandard deviation, 209 ± 18 μm v 194 ± 23 μm; P < .001). After adjuting for gender, no additional factor were found to be aociated ignificantly with CF thickne (P > .10).
Concluion
CF thicknee on tratu OCT in people with diabete and minimal or no retinopathy are imilar to thicknee reported from a normative databae of people without diabete. CF thickne i greater in men than in women, conitent with many, but not all, previou report. tudie involving comparion of retinal thickne with expected norm hould conider different mean value for women and men.
