Abstract :
Purpoe To determine the uefulne of optical coherence tomography (OCT) a a tool in guiding the femtoecond (f) laer in the creation of a ub-Bowman keratomileui (BK) flap in human eye. Deign A nonrandomized cae erie. Method In a private reearch laboratory etting, we performed an in vitro invetigation on human autopy eye. Five human cadaver eye, unuitable for tranplantation, underwent flap creation with a f laer. The laer procedure wa controlled in real-time with an OCT ytem (Thorlab HL AG, Luebeck, Germany) to enure that the cut wa placed jut underneath the Bowman layer. The f laer worked at a repetition rate of 10 MHz with a ingle-pule duration of < 400 f (pule energy in the nanoJoule range). A a control, all eye underwent hitologic diection (toluidine blue) and were examined uing light microcopy (LM). Reult Video monitoring of the flap creation upported the feaibility of real-time OCT monitoring of the f laer flap creation proce. A clear ditinction of the corneal epithelium wa poible in all eye. The Bowman membrane wa not identified in all donor eye at the given reolution of the OCT ued in thi tudy. till, LM examination confirmed that the real-time monitoring aured a poitioning of the cutting plane at minimum ditance underneath the Bowman layer. Concluion Thi mall laboratory tet offer evidence that real-time OCT monitoring of creation of a BK flap uing a f laer i poible, thu enuring that the flap i created at the proper depth.
