Abstract :
Purpoe
To compare fundu autofluorecence image (FAF) between a modified fundu camera (mFC) and a confocal canning laer ophthalmocope (cLO).
Deign
Evaluation of diagnotic technology.
Method
Thirty-two eye of 16 patient with age-related geographic atrophy (GA) treated in an intitutional etting were included. FAF image were obtained with both the cLO (excitation, 488 nm; emiion, > 500 nm) and the mFC (excitation, approximately 500 to 610 nm; emiion, approximately 675 to 715 nm). Uing etablihed algorithm, image were graded by two independent oberver and agreement were evaluated. The main outcome meaure were image quality, quantification of total atrophy, and claification of FAF pattern.
Reult
In two eye with advanced cataract (len grade 7 according to the Age-Related Eye Dieae tudy claification), FAF image quality with both ytem wa not ufficient for any meaningful analyi. In the remaining 30 eye, the mean difference of the interoberver agreement for atrophy quantification were 0.16 mm2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.07 to 0.38) for mFC and 0.15 mm2 (95% CI, −0.04 to 0.33) for cLO image. Becaue of inferior ignal-to-noie ratio, FAF pattern claification wa poible in a lower number of mFC image (69%) compared with cLO image (88%).
Concluion
Thi tudy ugget that the agreement for atrophy quantification are imilar with both device. The leer viualization of FAF pattern with the mFC and thu inferior determination of dieae marker may be the reult of the nonconfocality and the ue of ingle intead of mean image compared with the cLO. Thee finding may be important for the deign of interventional trial a well a the routine ue of FAF imaging in age-related geographic atrophy.
