Abstract :
Purpoe
To decribe metallic intraocular foreign body (IOFB) injurie and identify prognotic factor for viual outcome and globe urvival.
Deign
Interventional, conecutive, retropective cae erie.
Method
etting: Will Eye Hopital. tudy population: Ninety-ix eye of 96 patient with metallic intraocular foreign bodie. procedure: Metallic IOFB injurie between January 1991 to June 2002 were reviewed for clinical characteritic, urgical intervention, and outcome. Univariate and multivariate analye were performed to identify prognotic variable.main outcome meaure: Final viual acuity and globe urvival.
Reult
The average patient age wa 33.0 year with a male predominance (94%). Forty percent of eye had a preenting viion of 20/50 or better. Following IOFB removal, 40% of patient required additional intervention. Thirty-one percent of eye had a final acuity of 20/50 or better. Eight percent of patient ultimately required enucleation or eviceration. Excellent viual outcome (defined a ≥20/50) wa aociated with multiple variable, including normal len at preentation and anterior egment IOFB (P< .003). Factor aociated with poor viual outcome (defined a <20/200) included uveal prolape and poterior egment IOFB (P < .0003). Globe lo wa aociated with younger age, preenting light perception (LP) or no light perception (NLP) viion, BB/pellet injury, and the preence of an afferent pupillary defect (P < .01).
Concluion
Multiple prognotic factor were identified in thi large analyi of metallic IOFB injurie, which may help predict viual outcome and globe urvival. Mot of thee variable were independent of intervention and can be identified at the time of initial preentation.
