  • Abstract
Purpoe To determine the role of hematological and genetic factor in the development of orbital infarction in ickle cell dieae. Deign Retropective, noncomparative cae erie. Method Fourteen ickle cell dieae patient were diagnoed with orbital infarction during a vao-occluive crii. Clinical and radiological finding were reviewed retropectively. ickle cell dieae patient without orbital infarction were recruited a control after matching for dieae everity. ickle haplotype were determined for all patient. Difference between group were evaluated tatitically. Reult Patient with orbital infarction in ickle cell dieae preented with acute periorbital pain and welling with or without proptoi, ophthalmoplegia, and viual impairment during a vao-occluive crii. Radiological finding included orbital oft tiue welling (100%), hematoma (orbital, 36%; intracranial, 21%), and abnormal bone marrow intenitie. everity of orbital involvement wa unrelated to that of the ytemic dieae (Pearon correlation coefficient, −0.1567). Affected patient predominantly had the Benin haplotype (P < .00782). Concluion Orbital infarction i a potential threat to viion in ickle cell dieae patient. Magnetic reonance imaging i more pecific than computed tomography or nuclear cintigraphy in the evaluation of orbital change. The degree of everity of the orbital manifetation appear unrelated to the everity of ickle cell dieae. Patient with the Benin haplotype are more likely to develop orbital infarction during vao-occluive crie.
