Abstract
The Iowa Dental Control Index (IDCI) measures the amount of control individuals desire (desired control) and expect to feel (predicted control) in dental situations. Two studies provided information about the reliability and validity of scores on this revised instrument. In the first study, 136 dental patients completed the IDCI and several other scales. Factor analysis results, correlations, and regression analyses confirmed the theorized pattern of relationships among the subscales of the IDCI and other measures. In the second study, 208 dental patients completed the IDCI and other measures of dental distress before and after a 1-2 year interval. Correlations among the measures revealed the hypothesized pattern and confirmatory factor analysis results provided moderate model fit. Taken together, the results of the two studies strongly support the reliability and validity of these IDCI scores for this population.
