Abstract :
Waste Stabilization Ponds (WSP) are now regarded as wastewater treatment method of first choice for the treatment of municipal wastewater in many parts of the world. Natural biological and physical processes are used to treat wastewater to the required effluent standard. The quality of the discharged effluent depends on both the process design and the physical design of the WSP. Researchers have attributed the poor performance of WSP in developing countries to both poor process design and poor physical design. In this paper; traditional, modified traditional and modern design approaches were appraised and utilized in the modelling and design of Ahmadu Bello University WSP extension. An Excel spreadsheet programme was developed and utilized for the design of the WSP extension using the traditional and modified traditional methods. WSP extension design using the modified traditional method gave an anaerobic pond area of 9,993m2, facultative pond area of 247,842m2, 1st maturation pond area of 150,390 m , while 2n and subsequent maturation ponds area of 20,994m2.
