Abstract :
Water pollution is not a run of the mill affair, indeed cannot be, rather water pollution is a world wide concern and Bangladesh is not an exception. An investigation carried out to evaluate the waste water quality of Chittagong City. Pollution level were determined on the basis of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Kjeldhal Nitrogen (TKN), Total Phosphorus (TP), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), Total Suspended Solid (TSS) and chloride etc. and microbiological test named Total Coliform. In most cases, wastewater samples show high value of different test parameters, which exceeds value recommended by Bangladesh environmental conservation rules, 1997. BOD, COD, Total suspended solid (TSS) value and number of coliform bacteria were found to be very higher than the standard limit, indicating deteriorating condition. Where as TKN and TP values were within satisfactory limit. Chloride values were satisfactory except sample Parki Khal. TDS value shows extensive fluctuation during different months and sometimes found to be within satisfactory limit. We can say that wastewater pollution of Chittagong city is strong for BOD, COD, TSS and Coliform bacteria. So, set up a wastewater treatment plant is very much exigent to prevent further defilement of natural water bodies.
