Abstract :
The study was designed to investigate the effects of gender on the periodic amount of Cr ion accumulated in blood, heart and liver of albino rats following a four-weekly intraperitoneal administration of K2Cr2O7 solution. The level of Cr ion in the organs 72h after each of the four weekly dose administration and another four weeks of recovery were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The levels of Cr ion accumulated were compared by Duncanʹs post-hoc tests (two-way ANOVA, P < 0.05). The concentrations of Cr ion in blood, heart and liver of the rats increased sharply compared to the control groups from the first week of administration of Cr solution and decreased gradually as the dose period progressed. The total Cr ion accumulated in both sexes of the rat followed the ranking blood > heart > liver; though the male accumulated more. A high significance existed between the mean values of Cr ion in all the organs studied in the experimental female rats compared to the control group, while a slight significance existed in the male counterpart. There was statistical difference in the amounts of Cr ion in the blood and heart of the male rats compared to the female groups. This study inferred that the male rats had a better resistance to Cr ions toxicity and a weaker recovery from dose exposure compared to the female.
