Abstract :
. This paper presents an architectural framework of an Expert System in the areaof agriculture and describes the design and development of the rule based expertsystem, using the shell ESTA (Expert System for Text Animation). The designedsystem is intended for the diagnosis of common diseases occurring in the riceplant. An Expert System is a computer program normally composed of aknowledge base, inference engine and user-interface. The proposed expertsystem facilitates different components including decision support module withinteractive user interfaces for diagnosis on the basis of response(s) of the usermade against the queries related to particular disease symptoms. ESTAprogramming is based on logic programming approach. The system integrates astructured knowledge base that contains knowledge about symptoms andremedies of diseases in the rice plant appearing during their life span. An imagedatabase is also integrated with the system for making the decision support moreinteractive. The pictures related to disease symptoms are stored in the picturedatabase and the intelligent system module prompts these with the interfacebased on rule based decision making algorithms.
