Comparison of promising and traditional wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)cultivars

ABSTRACT: In order to determine the features of yield and yield components of wheat cultivars, an experiment was conducted in flat region of the province of Mazandaran, of northern Iran. Number of eight wheat cultivars i.e. N-8118, N-864, N-868, N-86 3, Darya, Shanghai, N–8019, and Milan were studied using the randomized complete block design in four replications, during the cropping season 2008–2009. The results obtained showed that the cultivars exhibited larger seed yield, higher levels of biological yield, and greater harvest indices that had longer spikes, more seeds per spike, large numbers of tillers, greater 1000 – seed weights, heavier seeds in spikes, and more spikes per square meter. The results also showed that the maximum seed yield (6700 Kg/ha) was observed for the cultivar N-8019, the greatest harvest index belonged to the cultivars N-868 and Darya, and the highest level of biological yield was observed in the cultivars Milan and N-81-18 with 20.87 and 19.20 percent, respectively.
